Why Choose A Certified Diamond?

A diamond that has been certified has been assessed by respected and trained gemmologists. The gemmologists will assess the diamond based on many important quality factors including; colour, clarity, carat weight and cut. The certificate is issued in the form of a report and includes the stone’s characteristics that have been measured and evaluated.

There are many laboratories that grade diamonds and provide certification. To list a few; International Gemmological Institute (IGI), Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD),  American Gemmological Society (AGS), Independent Diamond Report Centre (IDRC) and Gemmological Institute of America (GIA).

Many diamond suppliers and jewellers hold a preference to diamonds certified by the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) as they are known within the industry to have the strictest standards and highest expectations of a diamond.

GIA created the first and now globally acknowledged ruling for describing diamonds: Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight. The 4Cs of Diamond Quality is the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond. By creating the Diamond 4Cs the GIA ensured two things: diamond quality could be communicated in a universal language and diamond customers would have complete clarity in what they were purchasing.

As creator of the Diamond 4Cs and the International Diamond Grading System, GIA is not only a global authority, but the world’s trusted source for unbiased assessment. The GIA is a non-profit organisation that grades diamonds independently with no profit related bias.

The advantages of buying a diamond with a GIA certificate include:

  • Having the peace of mind in what you are buying.

  • Every important factor you need to know about the diamond is described in the certificate.

  • When a diamond is accompanied by a certificate you will have the added reassurance that your diamond has not been fracture-filled (a method of improving the diamond quality artificially). The GIA refuse to certify these diamonds.

  • Along with treated diamonds, there are also man-made synthetic diamond in the market. Again, GIA will also disclose this information and refuse to certify.

  • Certification is now considered the 5th C of the 4Cs due to the value it adds to your purchase. Purchasing a GIA certified diamond will provide you with much confidence and value.
