Why Does My Engagement Ring Look Cloudy?

One of the most common questions we hear is:
“Why has my diamond suddenly lost its sparkle?”
In most cases, your ring simply needs cleaning.
Everyday products like:
Hand cream
Soap
Makeup
Sunscreen
Hair products
Cooking oils
Can leave residue behind, particularly underneath the stone where light enters the diamond.
Even the most exceptional diamond can appear dull when coated in everyday build-up.
Regular cleaning helps restore sparkle whilst also helping you monitor the overall condition of your jewellery.
The Best Way to Clean an Engagement Ring at Home
For most diamond engagement rings, this is a gentle and effective at-home cleaning method.
You Will Need:
Warm water
Mild washing-up liquid
A soft toothbrush or baby toothbrush
A lint-free cloth
Step-by-Step Ring Cleaning Guide

1. Fill a Bowl with Warm Soapy Water
Add a few drops of mild washing-up liquid into warm water.
Avoid boiling water or anything too hot, particularly if your ring contains delicate gemstones.
2. Soak Your Ring
Leave your ring to soak for around 15 to 20 minutes.
This helps loosen oils, dirt and residue trapped underneath the setting.
3. Gently Brush the Ring
Using a very soft toothbrush, gently clean:
Underneath the diamond
Around the claws
The gallery and setting details
Around the band
This is where dirt typically builds up most.
4. Rinse Carefully
Rinse your ring under lukewarm running water.
Top tip: Always use a plugged sink or bowl underneath just in case the ring slips.
5. Dry with a Soft Cloth
Pat dry using a lint-free cloth and allow the ring to air dry fully before wearing.
How Often Should You Clean Your Engagement Ring?
For everyday wear, we recommend:
Light home cleaning every 4 - 6 weeks
Professional cleaning and inspection every 6 to 12 months
Regular maintenance helps keep your ring sparkling whilst also ensuring claws and settings remain secure.
Our professional Ring Spa service includes deep cleaning of your diamond or gemstones along with a full inspection to ensure your stone(s) is safe and secure: https://www.hollyrobinsonjewellery.com/ring-spa-membership
What NOT to Use on Your Engagement Ring

One of the biggest causes of accidental jewellery damage is using harsh cleaning products.
Avoid:
Bleach
Chlorine
Toothpaste
Baking soda scrubs
Abrasive brushes
Acetone
Household cleaning chemicals
These can scratch metals, weaken settings and damage certain gemstones.
Ultrasonic cleaners should also be used carefully and are not suitable for all gemstones or antique rings. We do not advise using ultrasonic cleaners at home due to the risk of stones becoming loose or later come out of the settings.
Can You Clean Diamond Rings with Toothpaste?
No, despite being a common online “hack”, toothpaste is far too abrasive for fine jewellery.
Professional jewellers should never recommend toothpaste as a jewellery cleaner.
How to Clean Platinum Engagement Rings

Platinum engagement rings can be cleaned using the same gentle soap and warm water method above.
Over time, platinum naturally develops a soft patina finish. This is completely normal and many people love the luxurious appearance it creates.
If you prefer a brighter polished finish, professional polishing can restore the shine beautifully.
How to Clean Sapphire, Ruby and Emerald Rings
Different gemstones require different care.
Sapphire & Ruby Rings
Sapphires and rubies are durable gemstones and can usually be cleaned safely using warm water and mild soap.
These gemstones are ideal for everyday wear and are commonly chosen for engagement rings because of their strength and beauty.
Emerald Rings
Emeralds require much gentler care.
We do not recommend soaking emerald rings as many emeralds contain natural inclusions and treatments that can be affected by moisture and chemicals.
If you own an emerald engagement ring and are unsure how to clean it safely, we’d always recommend contacting your jeweller first.
Please note: with any gemstone that has had any treaments such as heating or oiling we always recommend contacting the jeweller that created your ring first. The creation and chemical composition of stones can vary quite dramatically.
The Best Jewellery Cleaning Products
If you prefer using dedicated jewellery cleaning tools at home, we recommend choosing soft, non-abrasive products designed specifically for fine jewellery.
