Asking your future spouse their finger size can be a complete give away, so I have put together my top 7 ideas on how to find the right finger size with no suspicions arising.
Get By With A Little Help From Your Friends
If you haven’t already involved your partners best friend or sibling now might be the time to do so. They are sure to have chatted about the potential of an imminent proposal and may have shared the important conversation that “one size doesn’t fit all!” ?
Try & Try Again
Take of their rings and slide it onto your finger. Make a little mark with a pen where the ring goes up to and viola you have a ring size to bring to your engagement ring consultation. (I do advise completing this one post – shower!)
Borrow A Ring
One of the most effective ways to estimate ring size is to borrow one of their rings and present this to your jeweller. If you can select one that sits of the left- or right-hand ring finger that’s even better. Even if you bring a ring from another finger, we can approximate the size required.
Drawing Is Putting Line Around An Idea
If you are unable to get one of their rings out of the house, simply trace around the inside of the ring and bring this to your appointment.
Take A Chance
We can always guesstimate the size and style of the ring willing we can re-size after the proposal. Bring a photo of your partner (including their hands!) to your appointment – you will be surprised how many times I have successfully guesstimated from a candid shot!
Better To Be Too Big
If we don’t have an exact size to start your order, we can place an order of something a little too big. This way you can be confident that the ring will fit for the proposal and the proposal photographs plus it is a lot easier to make a ring smaller than larger.

Top Tips To Remember
Measure the correct finger!
The fingers on your dominant hand tend to be larger than those on your non-dominant hand, so keep that in mind when measuring for your ring size.
The thicker the ring, the tighter the fit.
If you choose a ring with a wide band width, you will likely need to go one size up. (normally 4mm width plus for ladies & 7mm width plus for gentlemen)
When to measure The best time of day to measure is in the evening, when your fingers are largest. Avoid measuring when you’re cold, as fingers are at least half a size smaller.Your ring should always fit comfortably on your finger without any fear of it falling off.
